Common Conditions of the Knee
The Knee is a complex hinge type joint composed of bones, ligaments, muscles and ligaments. These components all work together to provide support and stability during movement.
Patellofemoral Pain
This term, also called "runner's knee," describes discomfort in the front of the knee and around the kneecap (patella), often from overuse or arthritis.
IT Band Syndrome
The iliotibial (IT) band is a long band of tissue extending from the lateral hip to the knee which can sometimes become tight and painful.
Ligament Tear
Knee ligaments link your femur (thighbone) to your tibia (shin) and fibula (smaller lower leg bone). Sprains or tears in these ligaments are a frequent injury in sports.
Meniscus Tear
The meniscus is a C-shaped disc that cushions and stabilizes the knee joint. It can sustain injuries from sudden trauma or degeneration due to arthritis.
Stress Fracture
When bone sees more stress than it can handle, due to overuse or lack of cushion, a stress injury to the bone can occur.
Pes Anserine Bursitis
Bursa are lubrication sacs found throughout the body, including around the knee, which can become inflamed and painful.
Patella Fracture
This injury to the kneecap (patella) most commonly occurs due to a fall directly onto the knee and can reduce your ability to straighten the knee.
Baker's Cyst
These can develop due to arthritis or a meniscus tear causing excess knee fluid production. When this fluid leaks out of the knee, it can become trapped, forming a cyst.
Knee Tendonitis
Patellar tendinitis (jumper's knee), is an injury to the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone, responsible for extending your knee and is most common among athletes who frequently jump.
